Abstract

The standardized English proficiency examinations such as TOEFL often contain western cultural bias, which causes cognitive schema mismatch to students from Indonesian Islamic Higher Education Institutions. To solve this problem, the current research conducted the development and validation of domesticated TOEFL exam based on the ADDIE model in UIN K.H. Abdurrahman Wahid Pekalongan. Based on Schema Theory, Language Assessment Literacy, and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, the current research developed a domestication process of American-centric contexts to Indonesian socio-ecological, historical, and Islamic contexts. The final product of this research is complete 140 items blueprint of TOEFL-like exam consisting of 50 Listening, 40 Structure and Written Expression, and 50 Reading Comprehension items. The expert validation and schema mitigation evaluation prove that using familiar schemas to the students would eliminate construct irrelevant interference, so students can measure their English language proficiency without any obstacles.
